Home Build: Types of Stairs

by | Feb 21, 2023 | Stephens Homes, Stephens Living

Stairs are an essential part of most homes, but we rarely think about it when building a home. There are various types of stairs, each with unique design characteristics and purposes. Let’s briefly discuss eight types of stairs and the building structures accompanying them.

Straight Stairs

The most common type of stairs, straight stairs, are simple and easy to construct. They have a straight flight of steps that connect two floors. Straight stairs are probably the easiest to build in just about any home! They take up a small amount of room and are the most functional staircase design.

L-shaped Stairs

L-shaped stairs are ideal for spaces that require a change in direction, making them a popular choice in homes. They have a landing that allows the stairs to turn at a 90-degree angle, creating an L-shape.

U-shaped Stairs

U-shaped stairs have two parallel flights of stairs connected by a landing. They provide an elegant design and are perfect for homes that have multiple levels.

Spiral Stairs

Spiral stairs have a circular design that curves around a central pole. They are often used in small spaces, such as attics and basements, or as a design feature. This stairs can be very difficult to use however, and I wouldn’t recommend them if you have children or pets.

Winder Stairs

Winder stairs are similar to spiral stairs, but they have a more angular design. They have triangular steps that allow the stairs to turn a corner without the need for a landing. Winder stairs provide a bit more of a modern look so if that’s not your style, be sure to avoid them.

Curved Stairs

Curved stairs are a beautiful addition to any home. They have a smooth, flowing design that follows a curved path. Curved stairs are often seen in high-end residential homes and provide a little more pizzazz as compared to straight stairs.

Bifurcated Stairs

Bifurcated stairs are grand and elegant. They have a large landing at the bottom of the staircase that splits into two separate flights of stairs. Bifurcated stairs are often found in grand entrances and luxury homes.

Floating Stairs

Floating stairs have a modern and minimalist design that creates a visual illusion of floating steps. They are supported by hidden brackets or steel rods, giving them a sleek and contemporary look.

In conclusion, there are various types of stairs that can be designed to complement any home’s structure and style. Whether it’s a simple straight flight or a grand bifurcated staircase, each type of stair has unique characteristics that make them suitable for different purposes. Your architect or builder must consider these factors when choosing the appropriate staircase.
