When you start a new build, one of the most important aspects is choosing the lighting. You’ll have to choose from various lighting options, so let’s go over them! No matter the options, you must keep your decor style in mind. Secondly, lighting comes in different hardware colors, so choose one and keep it consistent throughout your home. Some options are brass, satin nickel, or matte black; below, you’ll see examples of each. The types of indoor lighting you choose should complement your space, create focal points when necessary, and provide a warm and ambient interior.

3 Types of Indoor Lighting

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting is meant to be your primary source of light. Usually, this will be recessed lighting or another type of overhead lighting.

Accent Lighting

This is meant to draw attention to a focal point in the room—a small wall sconce above a painting.

Task Lighting

Task lighting is precisely what the name suggests- lighting made for tasks. A table lamp, a bedside sconce for reading, or under cabinet lighting to see what you’re doing in the kitchen!

Lighting Fixtures

So many lighting fixtures are available to put in your home! Let’s go over the most popular ones and what they’re used for. Remember, stick with the same hardware color throughout your spaces for a clean and cohesive design flow.

Chandeliers

Chandeliers are a statement piece and a focal point. The most popular room to include a chandelier is the living room, sitting room, or dining room. Flip through the lookbook below for some ideas!

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting is an excellent option for your kitchen! If you have a large island, pendant lighting is the perfect element to help create a focal point for the space! Hanging pendant lighting can be tricky, so be sure to read our blog on “Selecting and Placing Pendant Lighting.”

Sconces

Next, sconces are the best way to light up a hallway or a bathroom! Typically, these will be hardwired into your home, but some do come with rechargeable lightbulbs if you need to place them in a tricky area.

Flush and Semi Flush Mount

These are for ambient lighting to be placed overhead. The point of this lighting is to light up an entire area. These are perfect for a room with low ceilings, closets, or bathrooms. Semi flush mount lights hang a little lower, usually about 1/2 a foot to a foot below the ceiling.
